Meet the team behind Dorm-U

As freshman, we thought we could design our dorm rooms to look magazine-worthy all by ourselves.  That was a lot bigger of a task then we thought.

We know that it can be difficult to design a new space in a way that is both personal and feels professionally designed. Dorm-U was created to help those just starting out to find affordable decor to make their home-away-from-home. We have the opportunity to help young adults all over the world through our online platform, so you have the opportunity to connect with one of our professional stylists today!

Our stylists work with you to combine your personal items with a variety of specialty decor items offered from our retail partners in order to help you create your first home-away-from-home.

Alyssa

Project Manager/Brand Ambassador

Alyssa is from Danville, which is located in the Bay Area in Northern California. She has a Mom and Dad still in California as well as two younger sisters. She is currently a junior at Washington State University and is double majoring in Strategic Communication (Public Relations focus) as well as Sport Management. She has always been interested in sports from a young age, and being able to communicate to many publics about her passion of sport would be an ideal career path for her.
Alyssa is the Brand Ambassador/Project Manager for Dorm-U. Her primary jobs are to ensure that the brand is always exemplifying the highest standards for both quality and affordable items. She is also in charge of overseeing project deadlines and helping those on her team with anything they need, as well as ensuring that everybody at Dorm-U is happy with their position and the work they are doing. Alyssa is also the contact point for anybody who is interested in learning more about Dorm-U or companies who are interested in joining our team to deliver their products to those looking on the website.
Alyssa hopes to become a Public Relations Manager for either a professional football or basketball team once she completes her degree from WSU in Spring 2018. Graduating with a job lined up in any sport would also be an aspiration that she has, to be able to start climbing up the corporate ladder as soon as possible. She is currently employed at Washington State University’s recreation center, where she is a service attendant, as well as through Washington State University’s athletic department as a student-athlete peer tutor. Both of these jobs have taught her valuable life skills such as exceptional customer service, leadership, organization, and patience. Alyssa is also a member of the National Honors Society on the WSU campus, and was selected as an Edward R. Murrow College of Communication Ambassador in the Spring of 2017 where she now serves as Service Chair. Being involved in the WSU community has made her more aware of the amazing opportunities that the university has to offer its students, and has her encouraging younger students to become as involved as early as possible.
Alyssa believes that the best qualities she has to offer her team are the leadership and organizational abilities that she has created for herself over the years. Being a team player is also an important aspect to her, as she never wants anybody to feel like they are biting off more than they can chew, so she is willing and able to help with almost any challenge Dorm-U faces. She hopes that this attitude will enable her to be a good point of contact as well, as she has never met a problem that she has backed down from. Whether it be a challenging customer or technological problem that the company is dealing with, Alyssa will not stop until she has found a solution.
Her favorite quote is “Stay Positive. Work Hard. Make it Happen,” which she believes inspires her to motivate not only herself but others to work as hard as possible to make their dreams a reality.

Kianne

User Experience Manager

Kianne Littleton is a junior at Washington State University. Originally, she is from Renton, Washington but made her way to Pullman with hopes of earning a degree in communications with a minor in digital technology and culture. In her free time, Kianne enjoys working and spending time with her friends while she is away from her family. With dedication and motivation, Kianne is doing her best to manage school with fun, college is four short years of your life so enjoy it while you can.

As for the project, Kianne is the user experience manager. Kianne is in charge of making sure all sites are enjoyable and easy to maneuver for potential customers. She finds it important that customers aren’t stressed and overwhelmed when visiting our website; therefore this includes making sure social medias are up to date and sites are visually pleasing yet easy to understand. Kianne excels in organization and representation thus she why she has been assigned this position. When it comes to the semester, Kianne is mostly interested in getting an inside on what it takes to run a “business.” She wants to learn about the dynamics of setting up websites as well as understanding what elements are the most beneficial when it comes to grabbing the audience’s attention. This includes better more information on what colors tend to attract people, what makes a website appealing to people, and what makes a lasting impression on viewers/potential customers.

For right now, Kianne is unsure about what career path she wants to take. She does know that she loves talking to people and interacting within the community. Kianne is studying public relations so she aspires to work somewhere in that field, possibly in events and/or sports. Long-term goals consist of finding a stable job that she enjoys going to everyday; way too many people do what they hate for a living.

When it comes to working with Kianne you can find hard work. She is a very fast paced worker, but also enjoys a calm work setting. Organization is key to being successful; at work and in life in general. She also tends to be a people person, therefore you can discuss any subject involving work but also about anything else going on in life. She believes in helping out; there is always something to do. If she notices someone is behind in group work or struggling in general, Kianne has no problem in asking if an individual needs assistance. Teamwork really does make the dream work; if everyone works together.

Kianne’s favorite quote in life is “different roads often lead to beautiful destinations.” Life doesn’t always go as planned, and trying to have a positive look out can be hard sometimes when challenges appear in an individuals life. Challenges in life often tend to be out of our control, but how we approach them is in our control. Kianne believes that even if the road you took isn’t the one you planned, a positive outlook is going to get you farther in life than a negative one. Find the beauty in everything, and appreciate the small things.

His main focus will be using blog posts, social media updates and website content. Andrew will be learning what it is like to be on the inside of a living campaign like this and what it takes to consistently reach a target audience for a brand.

After Dorm U, Andrew hopes to work in digital content production. Whether as an independent creator or as part of a team or partnered with a brand Andrew wants to create digital media that is fun and engaging while still being professional and effectively communicates to a target audience.

Eventually Andrew dreams of working in the entertainment industry writing or performing for shows like Saturday Night Live, The Daily show or other late night programs. As a child he grew up watching great comedians and actors and sought to emulate them from a young age and was always working to get a laugh.

Andrews experience with sports as a child prepared him to work as a team playing Baseball and Football until High School. His Experience on his High School improv team sophomore to senior year and captaining the team senior year gives him experience problem solving with a team and working in unpredictable scenarios.

Whatever the scenario Andrew is looking forward to helping make Dorm U the platform it can be for students and young professionals as they move into new and exciting places, always being able to be at home.

One quote I can always look to when I am looking for direction or motivation is known as “The Clown's prayer”

As I stumble through this life,

help me to create more laughter than tears,

dispense more happiness than gloom,

spread more cheer than despair.

Never let me become so indifferent,

that I will fail to see the wonders in the eyes of a child,

or the twinkle in the eyes of the aged.

Never let me forget that my total effort is to cheer people,

make them happy, and forget momentarily,

all the unpleasantness in their lives.

And in my final moment,

may I hear You whisper:

"When you made My people smile,

you made Me smile."

Annabelle Hutson

Creative Director

Annabelle lived almost her whole life in Bellevue, Washington, before she moved to Pullman for school. She aspires to double major in Strategic Communication Advertising and Scientific Communication. Originally she did not expect to double major, but after adding her second major she has fallen deeply in love with both her areas of study. Although she has not set her sights on a particular job yet she has several ideas of what she would like to do. One area of interest is becoming a producer for an advertising agency, where she can produce advertisements with a team, and have a hands-on part in creation of advertisements. With the addition of her Scientific Communication she has since realized the importance of scientific communicators in the current state of America. Due to a significant trauma in her past she has an interest in communicating medical information to the public, to help other people like herself be knowledgeable when it comes to medical advancements and information.

Annabelle is currently employed by several employers. She works as an equipment room technician for the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication, where she is in charge of distribution of broadcasting equipment to her peers who study journalism. She is currently on leave from working as a sales associate at the fortune one company, Walmart. Over the summer and holiday she works at store 100 in Bentonville, Arkansas, where her parents currently live. At the moment she is certified by Zumba company to be a Zumba instructor, and is working with the WSU UREC to become a Zumba instructor for other students on the campus.

As Creative Director for Dorm-U she is most excited to work on website design, especially using her own photography. Her main duties include making sure there is visual content to post on social media, the website, and anywhere else the team may need graphics. She is well versed in Photoshop and other Adobe products, which is an asset to the team’s content.

After winning the Juror’s Choice Award for her drawing in Junior year of high school, Annabelle wanted to expand her passion for design and art. In 2015, as a senior in high school, she started her own photography company, and she is excited to bring both her skills as a professional photographer and knowledge as a business owner to this company. She has a lot of experience with working in Adobe Suite products as well as with WordPress website design, and hopes this experience will aide her team as they begin designing the Dorm-U company. She is friendly and outgoing, and is excited for the project after redesigning her dorm space this past year into an oasis where she loves to be.

“Throw me to the wolves and I will return leading the pack” is the quote she strives to live by, not only because wolves are her favorite animal, but because she aims to be a leader to others, to be strong and compassionate, and to make the best of all situations.
